Dr. Paul Farmer, UN Deputy Envoy to Haiti and Founder of Partner in Health, calls the cholera epidemic than began in Haiti in October 2010 one of the worst epidemics in history. As of December 18, 2011, the Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population reports 521,000 cases of cholera and 7,000 deaths caused by cholera. Wyoming Haiti Relief is partnering with Pure Water for the World to provide pure water for the poorest in Haiti.
A donation of just $200 provides a Haitian family pure water for 10 years, protecting them from cholera and other waterborne diseases. By installing public filtration systems in schools, Pure Water provides an effective system of water hygiene education and follow-up. Currently, Pure Water for the World is replacing the filters previously installed in hundreds of schools, but broken in the January 2010 earthquake.
